Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a carbon repair cost?

The exact cost of a repair will vary from one to the next but the most common repairs come in between $300 and $400. The price is based primarily on the complexity of the repair and how much time I expect the work to take.

How long does a repair take?

I’ll give you a time estimate when I receive your bike based on my current availability. I’m able to complete most repairs in around 1 week but that can occasionally get pushed out to 2-3 weeks depending on current workload.

What training do you have for carbon repair?

Along with my college degree and 14 years of experience as a mechanical engineer I have also recently completed a professional training course in Aerospace Composite Repair Analysis and Substantiation. Of course that is in addition to my 15+ years of hands-on experience with carbon fiber and nearly as many years of providing carbon repairs for others.

Do you do paint restorations?

Not really. I have done a bit of paint work in the past but I don’t have proper painting equipment or enough painting experience to give the results I’d like to offer. Instead, I primarily use vinyl wraps to cover my repairs. I get much better looking results with wraps than I’ve ever been able to get with paint. The wraps are very durable but also removable with a little heat so that if you ever decide to take your bike to a 3rd party painter it would be very easy to do so. Take a look at the Photos page to see some examples of what I’ve been able to do with wraps on some recent repairs.

Is it safe to repair carbon fiber?

Yes, carbon fiber has a long history of reparability on airplanes, boats, wind turbines, etc. to save components that could be worth 10s or 100s of thousands of dollars.

Is a repaired bike as strong as before it was damaged?

Yes, I take great care to make sure my repairs are as strong or stronger than the original while also being sure to avoid any new stress risers that could cause problems in the future. I personally ride nothing but bikes I’ve repaired and I intentionally push them hard.

Do you repair anything other than bikes?

In principal I could repair damage on most anything made of carbon fiber but bikes are my mainstay for sure. I’ve been asked before about things like kayak paddles or hockey sticks but unfortunately they take just as much labor as a bike repair so the cost of a repair is usually in the same range as just buying a replacement. I’ve also been asked about cars in the past but I really just don’t have the space to handle vehicles right now.
